Fit After Kids
I am not naturally thin or particularly athletic. I had about 40lbs to lose after my second daughter was born.
But I do work really, really hard in a strategic way. Even with two kids, a busy family life, and a full-time job, I reached my fitness goals.
And you can, too!
There’s a lot of fitness info out there, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are my 10 tips for getting fit after you have kids.
nutrition
1. Build balanced meals and snacks around a lean protein source. Protein will keep you full and help your muscles recover from a workout.
2. Eat plenty of colorful, nutrient-dense foods. If necessary, you can substitute fresh foods for processed, canned, or frozen options. Just be sure to choose foods without added sauces, breading, or sugar.
3. Ditch the alcohol. Or at least severely limit it. It’s making you tired, adding unnecessary calories, and impacting your recovery.
training
Let’s talk about the gym next.
4. You should follow a structured, challenging program that combines strength training, flexibility, and cardio.
5. Remember that while random Instagram and TikTok workouts can be motivating, they aren’t a substitute for an organized program designed for your unique goals.
6. Find a consistent time. For me, working out 4-5x a week in the early morning before my kids get up is the sweet spot for balancing fitness with my career and family.
7. Find movement that you enjoy. I genuinely love lifting, so most days it doesn’t feel like work. It’s fun. To stay consistent, I’d recommend finding the joy behind what you are doing.

8. Progress is made outside of the gym. I know you’re busy, but get as much sleep as you can (7-8 hours is ideal).
9. Be sure to take at least 2 days off from the gym each week. You won’t see the best results if you’re overtraining (which I have been guilty of in the past).
10. Caffeine isn’t a substitute for a good night’s sleep.
Now, I’m off to check a few more things off my holiday to-do list. Seriously, how is it December 18th already? xoxo, Haileigh
