Collagen
Collagen supplements are having a moment right now. I’m sure you’ve seen celebrity endorsements that claim supplementing with collagen can boost muscle mass, improve skin elasticity, and increase joint mobility.
But what is collagen, exactly? And can it be a supplement to your daily protein shake?
Collagen is a fiber-like protein used to make connective tissue in the body. You’ll find it in your bones, tendons, cartilage, and muscles.
It can also be found in food, like in tough cuts of meat (pot roast, brisket), fish skin, and bone broth. Since those aren’t the healthiest or most appetizing things to eat, many people supplement their collagen by taking collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen supplements. (Both of these terms simply mean that the collagen has been broken down into smaller, easier-to-digest units.)
Although quality human studies about collagen’s benefits are lacking, there doesn’t appear to be any major side effects to taking it. I personally take Vital Proteins original bovine collagen daily for hair, skin, and joint benefits.
So, can it replace your daily whey protein shake? No. Even though collagen is protein, it’s not a complete dietary protein. This means that it is missing one or more amino acids (in this case, tryptophan) that helps us build muscle and fuel our bodies.
It’s best taken as a complement to your whey protein shake. Taking both each day can help you feel your best and build lean muscle, clear skin, and flexible joints. If it gets me one step closer to looking like Jennifer Aniston when I’m in my 50s, sign me up. <3
